Dogs love summer as much as we do! They enjoy going outside more often and the freedom of summer to have fun outside. While it's fine to go on day trips or local trips with your pets in warmer months, be aware that they can still feel the heat or cold and it can make matters dangerous. It can be hard to keep a pet cool during the summer. Unlike people, animals don’t sweat and their body does not produce as much sweat. When it gets very hot, they’ll try to cool themselves down by panting or going somewhere else like a shady area. When dogs are exposed to higher temps, they can’t cool themselves down as easily. 1. If your dog likes to go on walks, then make sure it has a leash and collar so that when it tries to run away from you, the collar will stop its neck from getting injured.
2. Please ensure that your pet has access to plenty of fresh water and stays hydrated. Keep your pet cool as possible. Exposure to direct sunlight can be harmful to pets and may lead to heat stroke.
3. When walking outside, be aware of any poisonous plants or other hazards around you which could harm your pup if they ate them or walked near them by accident.
4. Avoid walking your dog during peak hours when it is the hottest outside because their paws cannot handle the heat as well as ours can because they have less blood flow in their paws than we do due to less hair follicles on their paw pads than we have on ours; this will increase the risk of injury and burns.
5. Always pick up after your dog whether in an open field or on a walk around town - this doesn't just keep the ground clean, it also keeps the environment safe for other animals who might come across it later.
6. One of the most common habits to break is leaving your pet unattended in a car. It might take just minutes for it to overheat and suffocate. People often underestimate how hot it gets inside a parked car! On a 78 degree day for instance, in an outdoor environment, temperatures can reach 90° in the shade and top 160 degrees if you're parked directly by the sun! Leaving your dog at home is your best bet on such days. It is advised to keep water and a dog dish in the car for when you are with your animal. When you are finished in the car, take them with you so that they can go to the bathroom.
7. Make sure your dog is protected from parasites like fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. If not protected, your dog is at risk for heartworm, Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and a host of other nasty and dangerous conditions. Keep in mind that many of these diseases can also be caught by people.
