A Historical Perspective of Livonia Michigan

Livonia Township, a municipality in the northern part of Wayne County, was formed through an act of March 1834. Before European-Americans settled Livonia, people from the indigenous Livonian tribe inhabited this area. Most members of Livonian tribes were expelled during territorial expansion.

The settlers named the town “Livonia”, after Livonia, New York, a town in the west from which many had migrated.

Livonia Township was separated from Nankin Township when a Livonia post office was established in June 1834. In the township’s days, many small communities developed. One of these, Elmwood, became known as McKinley’s Station when it originally incorporated in 1851.

When it first opened, the Giltedge area was on the Detroit, Lansing and Northern Railroad. Its own post office was in operation from 1858 to 1906. This post-office was a part of the township of Giltedge which, in addition to having its own post office for 1899–1902 also shared its services with a nearby branch of Lake Township’s.

Detroit, Michigan has been one of the most attractive locations over the past century for immigrants. Among them have been Christians from Palestine and Lebanon, as well as Muslims. Therefore by 1985, Palestinian Christians had settled in Livonia (as well as some western suburbs of Detroit).

Indian Settlements to Livonia City- 1796 to 1848

In 1796, the first Indian settlement in Livonia was started. This made Livonia the first white settler society to have its own Indian community. There were a couple of different reasons why Indians moved to Livonia. Some of these reasons include, violence on the part of the natives, famine and disease and finally a general desire for peace due to a tribal war that had been going on for years. The Indians who arrived in Livonia were mostly Seneca as well as other tribes from New York state.

The 1848 Treaty of Buffalo extinguished all Indian title to land in Michigan along with all other tribes present in this region at this time period.

Livonia City’s Development – 1848

Livonia City became a part of the state of Michigan in 1837. In 1848, the county seat was moved from Pontiac to Livonia. The railroad reached Livonia in 1850.

At this time, many residents in the area were immigrants from New York and Pennsylvania looking for new opportunities. Farming became an important part of life for these settlers with the most common crops being oats and potatoes.

Formation of Livonia Townships – 1859

In 1859, the Townships of Livonia were formed, which is now known as Livonia, Michigan.

The Township of Livonia was formed on February 15th, 1859 by the New York Land Company. The company bought a land tract of 40 square miles and divided it into six different townships.

Livonia Township is located in southeast Wayne County with a population of about 246,000 people.

City of Detroit Annexes Livonia Villages – 1921

The City of Detroit has annexed the villages of Livonia, Northville, Plymouth and Redford. This process was a part of the broader metropolitan reform that was going on.

The annexation greatly increased the size of Detroit. It also allowed for better co-ordination between the city and its neighboring communities. The villages were not annexed by force. They agreed to be a part of Detroit voluntarily because it had many public benefits that they wanted to be a part of such as citywide sanitation services, water works, street lighting and fire protection.

City Council and Regional Planning for Livonia – 1929

The City Council was originally called the Board of Trustees. The trustees met in the courthouse with a few lights and no microphones. In 1929, the county merged with the city and created a new government of 3 elected commissioners, 1 appointed commissioner, 5 councilmen-at-large, and an appointed treasurer.

In 1937, there were over 50 people on the Board of Trustees. It began to grow more difficult for them to meet in the courthouse because they didn’t have enough chairs or space for everyone. They also didn’t have enough space to do their work effectively during meetings so they had to go outside in bad weather just to have room to work on papers.

In response, they built a new City Hall building that was much larger so that it could accommodate more people.
